Some wedding days seem to have a little extra magic about them.

Toya and Marcus’ wedding at Nikola Estate was one of those days.

It began with the kind of sunshine you hope for on a wedding day — warm, golden and seemingly endless. The perfect backdrop for a beautiful celebration, before the atmosphere shifted as the sun went down and the evening began to glow.

For this wedding, we kept the floral styling beautifully simple and let two things take centre stage: red roses and candlelight.

A sunshine-filled wedding at Nikola Estate

There’s something special about a wedding that unfolds across the whole day.

At Nikola Estate, the sunshine created such a beautiful setting for Toya and Marcus’ celebration. The landscape, the warmth of the day and the relaxed feeling of everyone gathering together set the scene perfectly.

As a Perth wedding florist, I love working with a venue’s natural character rather than trying to compete with it. The flowers and styling should feel like they belong there — enhancing the atmosphere and giving the celebration its own personality.

For Toya and Marcus, the floral design was intentionally pared back, allowing the evening reception to become the moment where everything really came alive.

Red roses for an evening reception

As daylight faded, the mood changed completely.

Deep red roses brought a sense of romance and richness to the reception tables. Rather than creating elaborate centrepieces, we placed red roses in vases along the length of the guest tables, creating a beautiful rhythm that ran through the room. Red roses have such a strong association with romance, but used thoughtfully, they can feel modern, dramatic and incredibly atmospheric too.

The simplicity of the arrangements allowed the flowers to sit naturally within the table setting, while the colour brought warmth and depth to the evening.

When candlelight becomes part of the flowers

Then came the candles.

Lots of them.

Running the length of the guest tables alongside the red roses, the candlelight began to transform the space as evening settled in.This is one of my favourite things about wedding styling — the way a space can completely change once the sun goes down. Flowers give you colour, texture and movement, but candlelight gives you atmosphere.Together, the two create something that feels much more than decoration. The tables become warmer. Faces glow. Conversations feel a little more intimate. The whole room slows down.

And that’s really what we’re trying to create when we style a wedding — not simply something beautiful to look at, but a feeling you remember.

This wedding is a beautiful example of why I love combining flowers and candlelight.

You don’t always need more.

Sometimes a strong colour, and hundreds of little flames are enough to completely transform a space. For Toya and Marcus, the result was romantic without feeling fussy, considered without feeling overly styled, and most importantly, completely suited to the atmosphere of their evening celebration.

From the sunshine-filled afternoon at Nikola Estate to the warm glow of the reception after dark, it was a day that moved beautifully from one feeling to the next.

And those are the weddings I love most.

The ones where the flowers are beautiful, of course — but where the atmosphere is what you remember the most.
